Default '08 500 Touring initial oil change

I've been reading about being careful what parts guys suggest to use on your quads. Like SCRAMMYTODD who was given the wrong front diff. oil. My book says to use PS4 Plus Synthetic 2W-50 and the guy behind the counter is saying "we always use 0X-40, just use that". I asked if they have PS4 and he says yes, so I said just give me that. He's looking through this '07 book and I said I have an '08, maybe they changed something.

Anyway, my question. He said I have to drain the oil tank and the crankcase. My book shows only draining the oil tank. I also read some of you guys don't think the screen is worth cleaning because it's hard to get to and doesn't really get dirty. They didn't have a oil tank plug sealing ring in stock. Do I need to drain the crankcase and do I need a new sealing ring?

Thanks,
Bruce

The 2 oils 2w-50 and 0w -40 are very close and either will work.

Yes for your 1st oil change do it all and clean the screen!!! Then just clean your screen every other change, it doesn't need to be done everytime.

I ask my dealer for the first oil change and they told me even not bother about the oil screen....I'm not do the oil screen cleaning for my first oil change but I'll be doing it after a year just to check it. In my X2 manuel they said 0W40 for the motor oil...I use POLARIS oil.....touring said 2W50 ???

I have time so I might as well do the screen. I agree the two oils are close, and I think it would depend on the temps you ride in. We are in temps that don't go below 40F. Most of my riding is in the 60's to 70's. The '07 books show 0W-40 but my '08 manual says PS-4 Plus 2W-50. Maybe Polaris changed something.

Thanks for the replys.

The 500 Sportsman engine is the same since 1996 in 01 they added the 500 Scrambler's high duration Cam and larger Carb and called it a H.O, Now they offer EFI but its the same engine.

We have 97 Sportsman 500 with 7500 miles and it runs like new and all it seen was Amsoil 0w-40 and fram oil filter. I,m running the same in my 2001,If it works don,t fix it I say.

That's good to hear. This Polaris stuff is expensive. $26.31 for two quarts of oil and a filter. I know I can do better at an auto parts store. I know it synthetic oil but that price still sounds high. Next time I'll shop around.

Mobile1 are full synthetic also and cost $4.00 at Wal mart. I use a Fram CPH6607 oil filter which is like $3.00.

TLC, thanks for the info. I changed the oil and checked the screen. It is a pain like others said. For me it was easiest to remove the running board and remove the oil tank. The screen was clean as if new, but it was worth the checking. If you change the oil regularly and keep dirt out of the tank, I don't think the screen will have to be checked. Then oil changes would be easy. Also, after reading the book better, I pulled the plug on the engine and drained what little oil was left in there. Pinch the vent hose to prime the oil pump and everything worked out great.

Thanks for the replies. I like to do my own maintenance but definitely don't want to screw anything up.

Hey Bruce I was just about to do my 1st oil change and have a question. Do you remember the part number on your oil filter? I don't see anything in my owner's manual. I have a #3084963 but the diameter is smaller than what's on the engine. I could pull it off and check it or take a trip to the store and compare it to the one TLC mentioned (Fram CPH6607). But thought I'd throw the question out here.

That's the number I put on (3084963). I know I checked the thread size and where the o-ring was located. I thought I checked the diameter. But it works on my quad.
