To Winch or not to Winch ?

Hey guys ( and gals ) I am thinking about putting a winch on my 2000 SP500 and the dealer has a Warn 2000# with everything to mount it up and the guide rollers for $270 + tax, do you think this is a good deal or do I need to take a jar of vaseline in with me and smile real big ?

Not a bad deal considering the cost of the winch alone is around $300. I don't know what type of mounting bracket is required on an Polaris. For my HOnda it costs an additional $50. It would take you a couple of hours of time to mount it. Plus you are getting free installation(?) then go for it.

I just have one thing to add, if you ride with a butch of guys and one of them, or a couple already have one, I prolly wouldnt get one, but if you ride by yourself or ride with guy that dont have one, then I would prolly get one because they are great, alot better than trying to push yourself out, especially if you ride by yourself. My reason for this is because it kills the front aproch angle, because as soon as I put mine one, and went one the trails that I rode all the time, ther were a couple creeks I could no longer cross, because they had steep backs and the winch just dug right in....theres my 2 cents

Here is the set-up that your dealer is providing;

You are getting a $450 winch and installation would normally run you $100+, so $270 is a pretty good deal. However, I have a suspicion that your dealer sold a few ATV's during the $69 winch promotion that Polaris was running that the customer didn't want the winch. If that is the case, he is charging you $200 for labor. Regardless, though, $270 for an installed winch is very good.
As far as whether or not to get one, I sure would hate to get stuck and have to hike home. My buddy and I were riding on a frozen marsh the other day and he fell through near the edge. His Prairie sat with all three wheels spinning. If I hadn't been there with my winch he would have had to hike a couple miles (not bad, but imagine how far it could have been). Even though he could have made it out, there is no way a vehicle other that an OHV could have made it out there and no way he could have been pulled out without a winch (bear in mind we were on ice). Pretty cheap insurance when it comes to your safety, if you ask me.

My two cents worth...Five of us went riding today. One of us got stuck really bad. Tried pulling him out with a strap without success. Fortunately there was a nice stump close by to park the atv behind. Hooked the winch up and the rest is history. As far as the price goes...I don't think that is to bad of a deal especially if they install it.

Sounds like a great deal to me. Same deal would be about $375 around here.
I don't know what you ride, but if you are on a Sportsman, or any Polaris for that matter, you REALLY need a winch. It would take more than two people to lift it out of the mud like you can a smaller quad.

Sounds like a steal if it's a 2500# with remote!
You could get the Polaris Milti-Mount brackets and mount it to those.
The multi mount kit cost me over $600, but I can carry the winch on the rear top keep the front end light! Plus I dont have to mount a switch to the rack or plasric fender!

Thanks everyone for your input I really appreciate it. I am gonna go ahead and get one, I ride with my sons most of the time and the Magnum they ride doesn't have a winch on it either so it sounds like a good thing to have on at least one of them. and I am going to build tube bumpers for the front end of my SP 500 and the Magnum 500 also cause the Polaris plastic front bumpers do break easier than I thought they ever would. Thanks again for the input on the winch.
