Since we don't have tachs, what is the maximum speed in low range for my 01' SP500? 30mph sounds high but not strained.
Thanks.

I wouldn’t take mine over 20 in low.

I've had mine as high as 40 mph but it's really screaming. Only did it once though.

SportzMann,
Unfortunately my '01 manual states under "PVT System Operation" "Low Range: Basic operation at speeds less than 7 MPH. Heavy Pulling. Riding through terrain at low ground speeds".

That doesn't help me much. I am riding through 6-8"s of snow with some hill climbing. Guess I will be using "High" more often.

Thanks

i have a H.O. w/ 26 titan 589's and when i am going through mud i am always in low. I have gotten mine up to about 30 on the road in low. But i wouldn't do it very often. If u try to do to much stuff in high u will strain your belt and it will break from what i have heard!

WFO in low on my 00 500 SP non HO nets me about 31 mph. And thats after about 10 miles at WFO in about 6" of snow. High range in the snow is too hard on the engine. I think mine feels good getting wound out in low, 'cause she'll never get any higher than 45 mph on a straightaway on gravel, or pavement for that matter. I'm not complaining, did plenty of that last year. Heck, 45 mph is plenty fast for me on the cushiest ride of all quads.

Hey, you gotta run in low pulling through snow, and if you hit slush, you need the low grunt to pull through it. I've studded my bi/tri claws with about 1000 screws and found that to be very helpful in the event that slush reaches out and grabs you. I don't think redlining the quad in low will do any damage, provided you've kept track of oil changes and coolant levels. Actually I prefer low in the winter, it only cost be a belt 'cause I was pushing the SP kind of hard, but otherwise, its fine.
