Aftermarket cdi box ?????
Do not, I repeat DO NOT get an aftermarket CDI box for a 500 engine, unless it specificly states that it WILL NOT increase RPMS. However, most aftermarket CDIs do increase top RPMS by usually 1,000-2,000.
You WILL grenade this engine if you spin it past 7,000 RPMS. They are not meant to spin beyond that.

The Sportsmans are most likely clutched for lower RPMS, not anything to do with electrics. The stock primary springs don't have enough full shift tension to support over 5,500 RPMS. I know this because I have a tach on my Scrambler & have played with MANY primary springs 'till I found the one I liked. The stock blue/green stripe primary engages at 1,200 RPMS & full shifts to 5,300-5,500
The HO Sportsmans are the same engine as the Scrambler, but if they aren't the HO, they have a different cam & compression.
