Well, my man and I just got a new to us sportsman. It came to us with known problems. We had a friend who is very good with engines look it over and he said it was firing twice as fast as it should be. And he suspected the problem was in the ECM and recommend that we replace it. He said every thing else looked good.

Does this sound like it could be the problem?

Anything else we should check out? I don't know much about this but am trying to learn (I figure if I can do my own auto maintenance and even help change a tranny in my truck I can learn this).

I would like to impress my man and show him all the stuff I learned, so help me out here[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif[/img]

Also are there any good book on repairing the Sportsman 500?

welocme to the forum crystal. unfortunely your engine guy lead you astray, as there is no ecm in the 99' sportsman 500. they didnt recieve until late in 04'. so how does he know this bike is firng twice as fast as its suposed to be? tell us what the bike is doing or not doing and we can go from there.

 

Sorry about that. It was the CDI that he said was most likely bad. It was firing on every rotation of the crank when it should have been firing on every other one. It will start but will not stay running.

so what does this bike do when you start it? did he actually messure the rotation and spark. ive just never heard of(theres always a first) of somehting firing on every stroke. does it run shut right down bog out? please give more details.
