2001 Trail Boss Help Needed ]=
#1
Hey. i bought a used 2001 Trail Boss for $1800 (what a mistake)..... the spark plugs burn out too quickly.... the engine overheats to the point that it caught a liner on the inside of the fender on fire..... and it only reaches about 30mph which im pretty sure that it is capable of going faster. is there anybody that can give me a guess of what might be going wrong? and possibly a estimate of how much it might cost to bring this atv back to life? any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Welcome to the forums quadfreek2000.
These really aren't bad quads. First thing it sounds like the jetting is off. Is it stock, or did they change the pipe and air filter? If so, that could also be why it's running so hot. And that heat will naturally travel down the pipe. You may want to check the ramp buttons on the clutch. Sounds like they're worn out.
As for costs, well it really depends on what's wrong with it. Jetting problems are cheap to fix. About 5-6 bucks for a jet, but you may buy a couple to just to keep from making a trip back for more. It's the labor that will be a pain. You'll feel like you've disassembled half the quad to get to the carb. Not that hard if you're handy with a wrench. The hardest part will be guessing which jet to use. With more information, you'll find a good estimate of where to start on here.
Ramp buttons can be intimidating if you're not familiar with the clutch set up, but nothing to fear.
First thing I would recommend would be to get a factory service manual and look it over. Got mine (2000 Boss) on ebay for under 20 bucks.
If you're not sure if it's stock, or what is what, post a pic of what you're working on. Somebody here on the site has probably worked on that part before and will be able to help you.

If you are that hot, you are VERY VERY lean, you have a clogged jet in the carb, no one would jet that lean! Take the carb apart and spray carb cleaner through all the passage ways and blow it out with compressed air. While you have the carb apart check to see what size jet you have and post it here, other guys with the 325 4 stroke can give you feedback on jetting.
If it is that lean, don't run it anymore, you will burn a hole in the piston or fry an exhaust valve. Fix it before you ride anymore!
I hope this helps.

ps You should check the seal carb to engine, may be a vacume leak, but doubt it.
