Winch was part of the wheeler deal when purchased. I thought it was a 2500, but it was not. Will a 2500 be enough pull for the 500 Popo? I don't mud very often, but I like riding trails, cruising, and hunting in East Texas.

It seems that the 2500# winch is pretty much the standard winch size for full size machines, but some like to have all the winch they can get with the Sportsmans since they are a bit on the heavy side and usually when you get one stuck it takes quite a bit of pull to get them out.
maybe I'm not reading it right but did you get a 2500# winch with your 500 or was it a smaller one? I guess I was under the impression that the 500s came with the Polaris 2500 pounder

ive had a 2,000 lb, 2,500, and now 3.0 and i am here to tell ya that bigger is better. in most cases the 2,500 will be enough.
but ive found w/ mongrols statement not to be true as ive been stuck enough where my 3.0 almost didnt get me out and a 2,500 lb on my 500 i used to have didnt have a enough to pull me out. this is why i carrry snach block(2 of them now) w/ me to do what mongrol is saying to double the strengh of the pulling. you got to remember that these bikes way pretty much 800 lbs. w/ nothing on it and when you get on and gear and add the sucktion of what your stuck in its alot more weight then you realize. point is if you can afford it the bigger winch is the better way to go as you can never have enough where not enough and your bumming. imo.

Yes Stendori you're right. I should be careful commenting on my experiences with a much lighter quad compared to the full size ones. The 1500 lb one is great to pull a 502 lb machine.

ive seen 3 winches hooked up 2 a mule to get it out. one on the mule and 2 sportsmans they chained the back of the sportans to trees. i think they weren't getting everything they could out of there winches because they hooked teh cables all together so the atv cable and teh mules cable was attatched with meens the most pull they had was only 3,000 pound of force pulling the mule out with the 2500 on the sportsmans and the 3000 on the mule. am i wrong? i don't think i am or maby it was 5,000 fromt eh 2 atvs working together pulling on the mule. it barely came out haha.

i saw 2 or 3 guys(cant remember for sure) pulling out a 660 grizz. once and it took them all to do it and it took 1/2 hour to do it and beat the hell out of their bikes and winches. you should not hook the winches together(imo) as they dont all pull evenly sometimes. thats where a god ****** block would come in handy as mongrol mentioned. its like when you have your winch cable out and hooked to another bike and are pulling that bike out by trying to back up and not using the winch(myself, guilty as charged) is the worse thing for the winch if it doesnt have the proper break in the winch to lock the cable. thats why sometimes you migfht see some one back up and the cable just un spools some unless he isnt pushing the button.
