need brake help asap
#1
its a '00 xplorer. the right front caliper is messing up. at first it stuck and locked up. ate the brake pad right up. I've cleaned up the caliper and got it back in. after putting new pads on, its extremely tight and the new pads are rubbing the rotor. am I missing something? I thought about taking the shims off the pads to give it more room. is this a bad idea? any help would be great

i don't thing you are suposed to use shims untill teh pads are realy warn and you need then it wouldn't be a bad thing to take them out none of the atvs ive see have then but i know people that put them in after there brake pads worn.

At the very least your PROBABLY going to have to rebuild your caliper -stendori above- has given you the correct answer. A rebuild kit will come with new O-Rings for your caliper and a spring "if" there is one under the piston and a piston also possibly. You will need the piston if your old one has pit marking on it - if it just has a good layer of rust you could possibly just emery cloth it clean-nothing courser should be used though to clean it up-if courser is needed replace it. Or get on ebay and buy another whole used caliper

ok,i feel dumb. took everything apart, cleaned everything (piston looks fine) and put it back on. still was tight but not too bad. started turning the rotor more. yep, the rotor is warped. don't know why I didn't check it closely in the first place. got a new rotor on the way for it. let's hear it for overthinking!
