Default New Primary Spring

Rick, this is a little off path here but, how dose the clutch system in the Hawkeye/SP 400HO differ from the traditional Polaris clutch? Are the rollers, (300/400 clutch), pretty much the equivalent to the springs or the weights, (typical POPO clutch), and do they effect the RPM/power the same way?

hey rick i hear you are the goto guy about clutches i have an 01 scrambler 500 4x4 stock except for an k&n air filter and i think i would like to have these black and white springs i ride alot of trails and play in the mud i hear they are great for low end but do they take away with the top end speed? i like the thought of hitting the gas and having the quad come up easy but also like the top end speed what do you recommend? thanks 01 scrambler

I have an 06 Sportsman 450 and I just installed 28 Mud Bugs is there a spring that I could install that would give a little more bottom end but not change the top end ?
or Should I just go with a clutch kit ? and if so what clutch kit should I use ?

w/ those tires you'll need a complete clutch kit imo. you better use low range alot when your in the mud or your going to smoke the belt.

jokout, the stall or engagement point, if you will, in the Hawkeye clutch is controlled by the rate of the springs in the "starting clutch". THese are more difficult to change than the primary spring in a typical Polaris clutch, but they can be changed.

My Hawkeye has instant movement with the slightest blip of the throttle, unlike my Sportsman which had to build some rpm's just to move, especially in high. thats just due to the nature of the clutch's design.

I prefer the Hawkeye clutch design, (Yamaha, Arctic Cat, etc) to the old Polaris style anyday.

The rollers are like the weights in a typical Polaris Primary.

My Hawkeye & 400HO are just the opposite from yours Tennessee. 1st bit of throttle starts them movving, then some unproductive rpm, then hook up. If I didn't need some rpm to get the tracks moving, I would speed up the clutch engagement, particularly on the 400.

Mongrol I have seen no aftermarket springs for the starting clutches yet for the Hawkeye or SP400HO but give it some time and somebody will have them. They have them for Yamaha and Arctic cat. Higher RPM engagement sounds like exactly what you need with the tracks.

Bama, I have the same situation as Mongrol with the 400, not a big deal, just noticable.

hi,rick,i would'nt mind the next size stiffer primary spring to get alittle better rpm, i have paypal+a 01 scrambler 500 4x4 stock engine+tires thanx.
