Magnum 500 feedback?
#1
Tell me what everybody thinks of the magnum 500, I am currently looking at a used 2000 with 250 miles on it for 4700 dollars. I like the solid rear axle as opposed to the IRS. What do they go for new? I read a review on this site that said they burnt a belt up during testing??? Is this a problem? Oh and one other thing When do the new model year quads come out? 2002?

My brother-in law has both a 500 Magnum and Sportsman. The Magnum is a good, solid, fast machine, but is not as smooth riding as the Sportsman. I personally am quite enamored with it, but anyone with back problems should consider the Sportsman.
Ground clearance is OK, but not up to par with his Sportsman. It is more in lines with my Xplorer, but not as zippy.
If the belt worries you, go with a 2001 model as it has a 'lifetime' belt warranty. To be honest, as long as you use Low for towing and mudding, the belt will go a long time. I have over 3500 miles on my Xplorer's belt and my brother has an Xpress that just turned 5000 miles on the belt. It is about shot, but didn't break yet.

I've got a '00 500 Mag. I bought the Mag over the SP because of the solid rear axle figuring it'd be stronger and less probs in the long run. I had to replace the brake pads at about 275 miles, but that is normal if you do some muddin' since the stock pads are crap in the 1st place. Replace them with Severe Duty pads. I paid $5919 out the door for mine last March.
