starting issue

I have a 2006 300 Hawkeye and until last week things have been good with it.. It has 1200 kms on it. Last week it stopped all of a sudden and didn't show any power at all..it couldn't even be started with the pull start.. I finally found the fuse up inside the front fender and a 15 amp fuse was blown, I changed it and it fired up no problem.. problem solved for a few minutes.. I left it for an hour or so.. Then I tried staring it and it won't start with the electric start, I can pull start it though.. The electric start just makes a click but no power seems to go past that point.. once in a while it will start to turn over but it is intermittent.. Any idea if I need a coil or a starter looked at??

There are several posibilities, but I have to agree with MECHANIKE on this one, I would bet you have a loose connection/poor ground at the starter motor or solenoid. Check there first. Another posibility is the starting circuit in the key switch may be bad.
Which of the 3, 15amp fusses was blown?

the main 15 amp was blown.. haven't figured out why it blew yet but the loose connection maybe the cause.. I will start checking for lose connections. any other advice is appreciated.. Thanks for the help so far..

If all the connections are ok then check the starter silinoid. Cross the posts with a screw driver. If it turns over then check the small supply wire for power from the start button. If that's ok then change the silinoid. Sounds like just a loose connection at the battery though to me as well.

My starter would only start once in awhile and would do the click thing. If I tapped the starter with a hammer it would work again sometimes. I took the starter apart and it turned out to be a dirty brush sticking. I cleaned and freed the brush up and it has been good for a year now.

if its not a loose connection, then something is grounding out or a dead short to make it blow that fuse. agree jump the solnoide to see if the starter turns over or not. if the bike pushes 15 volts when its running then the recifier might be gone which would have overloaded(overcharged) the systen and might be the cause of the blow fuse. just a couple of idears.

I crossed the posts and nothing happened. I also checked the voltage at the posts at the starter and when the key si turned I am getting 12.8 volts.. could it be the starter is stuck?

I checked the voltage across the starter posts when I turn the key and and found 12.7 volts, but nothing turns.. Is that adequate voltage for the starter to start? Can I assume everythinbg is okay with the coil since I am getting power to the battery?
