Tapping into Reverse Switch
#1
has anyone ever installed a rear work light that was activated by putting the gear selector into reverse? i know the reverse light comes on the dash, so there must be a way to tap into that so the work light will come on in reverse. anyone done this?
is there an electrical wiring diagram showing the reverse switch and dash wiring?

Years ago I installed one on an old trailboss 1987. Right at the front of the engine under the plastic shroud, there was an electrical board. I only identified the wire going to the backup light and fed my back uo light from it.

P.M SCRAMMYTODD........He did it..........It is tied in with the Ohms(resistance) ..This tells it when the Quad is in reverse...........Not sure what wire or type you will need though!!.....Caper.........
On our newer Sportsman's ...you can check this when your in the info screen on your POD....

The new quads are nothing like the old ones. The new machines with the digital speedometers don't have a 12v wire to tap into for a backup light, and the ONLY way I know to rig it up is the Quadovator back-up light kit. $29 + about $5 shipping within the US. http://www.quadovator.com/1089042.html

n my '03 600, I tapped the purple wire running from the trans. switch as a ground, then ran a fused wire to 12v off my tailight/brakelight wiring. When you shift into reverse, the purple wire grounds completing the circut. Works great when plowing snow (no toggle switches to fumble with) and trail riding (other riders coming up behind you can tell your in reverse and to use caution) Did this mod to mine just after I bought it new . No problems, just be sure to seal up all your connections good. Hope this helps. Later

thanks Dearlh:
did the same thing to my sportsman 600 this morning, works great. i tried to add a inline relay, but the purple wire seemed to have some juice in it to trip the relay so it would not work properly. took out the relay and all works fine....thanks for the help.

Glad I could offer my comments, This past spring now, my back-up light quit working. Light seemed fine, alot of guys were telling me I burned out the trans. switch. I priced one at the dealer for $60.00 but turns out all that was wrong was my connection tapping the purple wire was loose. Redid the tap and was good to go! Five years and 1,370 mi. with no other problems than that. Later
