first test drive 08 x2 500
#1
Took the wife to test drive a X2 500 today and was less then impressed. Now before you think that I'm bashing polaris, I'm not. I have been lurking here on and off for awhile and like the x2. My father has a polaris and likes it and past ownership is one of the reasons I'm thinking of going with polaris.
Now, we go to the dealer and he shows us a 08 500 x2, he has and asked us if we wanted to test drive it. He goes inside to crunch some number while we are out with the machine. We drive for about 2-3 minutes on their property, which is a grassy field with small rolling hills, maybe 30 ft high. Nothing strenous for an ATV. After we take 2 hills at about 1/2 throttle, we reach the crest of the 2nd hill and the bike stalls and the check engine light comes on! WTF?! We waiting for about a minute and I started the bike up. It started right away and we drove the few hundred feet back to the shop and parked it. We notified the sales person. I was impressed on the power of the bike but I figured that it would have lasted farther then that! This didn't install much confidence in putting alot of my hard earned money on the table.
I wasn't even going to look at other machines but might now. Any idea why the bike stalled? Anyone else have these kinds of problems? Also, what would be a good price on the 500 x2? I had one dealer quote 6999 + tax, ect and the other was about 300 higher. I'm going to do some calling tomorrow as I'm still leaning towards polaris right now. I want to keep the price as low as possible as the wife and I are thinking of have a kid in the next year. I figure if I don't get my ATV now, I'm not going to get one until I'm in my 40's. I'm 30 now
Any advise would be appriciated! Thanks in advance

I know I had a key chain or the little paper key chain that the dealers put on them barely turn my efi off one time. When it did that I was like WTF just like you. When it did it again I finally figured out it was the key chain catching the gas cap and turning the ignition off just enough to stall it. Took the key chain off and never happened again. Look up Abernathy Polaris. They have the best prices in the U.S. as far as I know. I think you can get the 700 for cheaper than they are offering the 500 to you for.

Hey Colt,
I would be leaning towards what Jamiez71 said I had the same problem with my daughter gave me a birthday present which was a key ring for my X2 07 Sportsman and it did the same thing which really sucks. I have had a few issues with mine but nothing serious just silly things I did being a first time owner. I paid 6200 for mine and got some extra stuff the dealer thru in. Hey if you have to wait till your in your 40's go for it I'm there and it's my first one but love it now since the kids are out of the house and I'm going any time I want. Hope this helps

I suppose that it might have been the key but it only had a small tag on it and I didn't think that it caught on anything. I did turn the key off then back on and the check engine light was still on.
I wanted to drive it a bit longer, but since it stalled and the check engine light was on, I didn't want to risk damage to their machine so I took it back. I was just posting my first impressions with the machine. They did let it warm up about a minute before we drove it.
When your key shut off your machines, did the check engine light stay on? I don't know much about ATV's to be honest and don't want to make a mistake when buying one.

Could it have been real low on fuel? I know when I brought mine home the dealer had "forgotten" (probably on purpose with todays gas prices, lol) to put fuel in it and it was on fumes. I tried to back up a small hill where I had back the truck up to unload it and it died, I moved the truck and restarted it a few minutes later and drove it down the hill. That is when I noticed the fuel gauge. I put fuel in it and no problems since. Mine had like .1 hours on it, so I guess the dealer never put fuel in it when it arrived to them.

LMAO! You sound like all my friends who are finally starting their families! They are buying all the toys they can before the bomb drops! Glad those days are over for me!
The keychain thing is very accurate......that's exactly why I never use them on atv's! Go for another ride with the keychain off and make sure it is fueled up....
