Default Whats wrong with my ride??

My 97 magnum 425 2x4 will not go or stay in rev.while running. When i shift it to rev. it makes a knocking noise inside the belt cover box? If i hit the gas it starts knockin faster but dosen't move. I turned the bike off and put n rev. then cranked it and it work o.k. for a minute but then started knocking again. It almost seems like its not in gear the whole way? Anybody have any idea whats up?

My '96 had the same problem. There was too much play in the shifter assembly and it wasn't going all the way into reverse. There was also some play in the transmission case where the shift lever goes down into the transmission. I lucked out and it was fixed with just the shifter. Anyway I'd check all the linkages for play and go from there.
