2006 500 EFI idle problem
#1
Hey I am new to the forum and thought maybe someone could help me out with an issue. I have a 2006 500 EFI. It is all over the place when it idles, from 1500 RPm to 900 RPM. Sometimes it will just die but generally sounds like it is sputtering when it idles. I have had times when it wont start unless I give it gas too. It runs great once I get it up around 3000 RPMs. I have adjusted the throttle adjustment under the rubber boot (did nothing). I changed the spark plug, the old was very black but didn't help. I cleaned the air filter still no help. The battery is new, but I did notice when I check the voltage on the machine its around 11.5v. Is that low? My 700 wheeler is around 12v when I check that one. I was hoping it was something simple because I don't want to deal with the dealer unless I have to. Its still under extended warranty so maybe I should just take it in. Any advice would be appreciated.

did the 500 have the remapping done on yet? also not sure if that bike was part of the ecm recall or not but either one of those could be the issue.
big bumps, start a new thread so people can see what your asking as they might not check on this thread. havent heard anything bad about them but i deal mostly w/ the sportsman

I had a problem with mine stalling. The dealer did what they called a "Reflash" of the ecm. That fixed it. No problems after that. I was told the 2006 500 efi was not on the ecm catching on fire recall. They did however offer a high altitude reflash if you ride at high altitude. I think all of the reflashes are recall based so there should be no deductable on your extended warranty. I was not charged for any of the reflashes. Good luck, I love my 500 efi.

^^^^^ this is what i meant by remapping. i should have said reflashing lol. i still would for giggles check on the ecm.

if u have ur vin, u can send me a pm with it and i'll look and see if it needs the high altitude remap, if your riding at high elevation and not sea level, if thats not the problem, then ur throttle position sensor needs adjusted, have to go to the dealer for both of them

Is there any online info as to what updates there are for the ECM's or is this something you have to go to the dealer for? I assume the dealer would actively contact people for this since they don't want to have to do the extra work if it's not critical?

Not trying to confuse every one,but have had about 4 efi's with idling problems traced to short in small wires going to tps sensor. wiggle wires where tied to harness and see if improves temporaily. Harness kits are available for tps connection repair if needed. DONT try to adjust tps as trip to dealer will be necessary if you do! Have had to re-establish tps settings when customers have moved!! Off idle machines will usually run good as posted above. If under warranty Let Dealer take care of it!!Good luck.

Thanks everyone for all the help. Kerbbirds I will probably send you my VIN tonight to check. My 700 is having no issues at all. I will probably end up taking the 500 to the dealer since its still under extended warranty. I will keep you posted.
