Default Overheating - 01 500 Sportsman

I have been having a problem with the ride cutting out when under hard load. Example - full throttle in loose sand/dirt, or trying to run at top speed. I am worried that it may be leaning out when under load. I want to make sure I don't burn it up if that is the problem. My question is, the fan doesn't run all the time so I'm sure it's not getting too hot or the fan would be constantly running? Am I correct on this. I also have a 1999 500 which is not an H.O. The 01 runs substantially hotter which I would expect since it is a higher performance motor. Just wanted to make sure the fan would run constantly if it's overheating.

Sounds like its lean, may need to go up one size with main jet, try lowering the clip on the needle one notch, that may help it.

I thought about the jetting but do you think that would matter since it has never done this before. I have put 2800 miles with no problems?

If its a new symtom, try the fuel filter and take the carb apart and clean it thoroughly, one small piece of sand will plug a jet, is your air filter clean? I've had mine get hot and vapor lock once or twice but they usually quit when that happens, pull your plug and see how its running , should be dark brown to black colored.

I have the same ATV and the last couple of times out riding I have had problems with the fan coming on. The overheat light is coming on but the fan will not.

It actually worked for a little while this past weekend and then stopped. Any tips for fixing this problem.

I have cleaned it up good. The radiator had quite a bit of mud in it but it's all good now and the fan turn freely.

Thanks,
Dan

Just curious has it overheated since you cleared out the mud. Get to the back of the RAD too,
where the fan covers and shoot the corners real good. for real big problems with mud plugged
RADs you may need to left the front cargo box off to really get down in there with a garden
hose. My wifes 450 got real plugged one time and kept cutting off and flashing HOT HOT HOT
even after long periods of sitting, fan working too, her RAD was plugged real good.

I wish I could help but my 01 sportsman has been trouble free for me even with the Ground Hog front Hydrolic loader,it's never had a over heat problem....My friends had a over heat issue but it was a ecm or relay recall.

I believe I have the radiator pretty clean. I am more concerned with the fan not working. I may try to take things apart this weekend and see what's up. I can turn the fan freely so it's not gunked up.

Does the fan turn on after Idleing for awhile it should if not it could be the thermo fan switch or a bad conection.....just a thought.

Thanks for your help guys. I guess I am not overheating it just seems to be hotter than normal. Guess it's just me! Since the fan is not staying on all the time and I don't have any lights coming on I guess I'm fine. Now just have to tear into the carb to hopefully fix the problem. It's not running lean all the time because I pulled the plug and it looks fine. But again it doesn't cut out all the time, just when under hard load.
Thanks!
