I have a 2000 sportsman 4 x 4. this is the first polaris I have owned. I am not shure if the awd is operating correctly. The steering is very hard so I am thinking that it is in awd even when the switch is off. It seems to be in 2 wheel drive in reverse with the overide in. Is this correct?

 

Next time its hard to steer try wiggling the handle bars while backing about 5-10ft and see if that "cures" it. Sometimes they act like one of the older 4wd pickups and by going backwards you disengage the 4wd

 

You should have AWD in reverse if the overide is in.

 

hd - do all years go awd in reverse when overide is pushed in? or do you know when the system started operating like that?--thanks

 

Since day one 1996 to present the Sportsman's needs the override button pushed to have AWD in reverse gear.

 

it would eay to tell just my throttling it fast to spin the wheels. if it spins the rear wheels its in 2x4. and it will not go into awd in reverse w/out pushing the override unless someone has done a bypass over the override button.
