Your 500 is a 4 stroke=No reeds - 2 strokes use them and if Polaris is anything like ArcticCat save your money and buy Boysens and use stock cage, just use a dime for measurement to round out cages bottom and they will out perform V-Force any day at 1/3 the cost and none of the headaches that come with using brittle V-Force.

I'm sorry didn't mean to be a bonehead, Boysen are a after market product like V-Force which means that they are not a OEM product-meaning in this case Polaris product. With Boysen petals(reeds) you can use your stock cages-what they bolt on-and most people modify the stock-from the factory-cages to flow better. All of this applies to 2 strokes-engine that requires oil&gas mixed, your motor is a 4 stroke-gas only and go. I'm not being a wise *** by saying this but keep in mind your 4 stroke atv is like a car, it does require oil but the oil is not mixed with gas and burned. I tried to make it simple but I'm sure others could explain it better. Once again SORRY, its good that you want to learn, don't let a abrupt answer push you away from wanting to gather knowledge.

once again if this is a polaris 500 ho sportsman your asking about there is no reed valves in this engine. there is regular intake and exhaust valves in this engine like every 4 stroke engine(which is what you have). now if the valaves where not closing all the way, you would not have any compression either. i would ask the dealer or who ever your talking too, to re-explain in what there refering to as if there telling you about reed valves(2 STROKE ONLY) then they dont have a clue.

From what I read on her other post it does sound like the cam chain and or the auto tensioner broke, she said her brother rebuilt top end and after the job it was idling fine and then all of a sudden she heard a sound that "sounded like chains rattling" so for just a internet guess that would be where I'd start---"I WOULD TAKE THE AUTO ADJUSTER OFF + LOOK IN AT THE CHAIN.....DON'T MOVE ENGINE UNTIL YOU REINSTALL......." good call MECHANIKE
