Default Starter removal & rebuild on '00 Scrambler 500 4x4

Just wondering if I really have to remove all the clutches in order to get it out. It quit working all of a sudden, so I'm assuming the brushes are worn or stuck. I've looked on eBay for rebuild kits, are they ok to use? Also, if I find it's pretty dirty, what should I clean it with? Do I need to give any attention to the starter drive unit? Does it need to be lubed? Just like to get some input from those who've done this sort of thing.

I dont fight em anymore on the bottom bolt! Since I have my lift and clutch puller I just remove front clutch and seal plate to allow room to remove bottom starter bolt! I know some owners with SMALL hands and perseverance have done so without removal, but do it day in day out,I just give up! Check starter drive for teeth wear and binding, clean, regrease or replace. JMO, we used to send starters out to a generator shop and had rebuilt ones on hand, but most wouldnt last past 6 months! We stock brush kits for wrenchers, aftermarket and oem starters and starter drive units.

So what do you recommend? If rebuilding only lasts 6 months? Buy a new one?

I know there were a few threads here with a link to a shop that sells rebuilt starters, I just can't remember what it was. Sorry Search the forums and you will find it. They are a lot cheaper than stock I do remember that.

We tried two different shops for rebuilds, and I know they turned armatures, cleaned and replaced brush kits, but we just didnt have good luck with them lasting. You may have better luck!

Well I took the starter out . I took it apart and following the service manual checked & measured everything, the only thing wrong I could see was the brushes were stuck. So I cleaned everything up w/ electrical cleaner, put it back together and it's spinning over better than it's had for years...BTW I did not remove the clutches, did it from the top. Came out fine that way for me. There might be a bit more work to do it that way since the airbox had to come out, but I didn't want to mess w/ the belt cover, I've had good luck w/ keeping water off the belt the last time I've had the cover off (over 2 years ago), so I didn't want to ruin a good streak.

Well thought I'd update this thread, the starter quit working again. So I ordered an eBay starter w/ a 2 yr. warranty, hopefully it'll work out.
