Timing Chain Adjustment
#1
Hey there...
2000 TrailBoss 325
Is there a procedure to tighten the timing chain tensioner on this engine? Looking at an exploded view of the engine, it shows a tensioner pushing up agaist a lever (long thin rub block) that is pushing against the chain. Can this tensioner be adjusted to put more pressure against the chain? At idle, it seems to be making a high pitch tin like clicking/chirping noise. I'm guessing that the chain is loose and by adjusting it, ruling it out if the noise remains. I've already adjusted the valves.
Thanks

No the adjuster and guide do the adjusting, the guide may be worn so the chain is rubbing metal to metal, but I doubt it. Take the clutch cover off and run engine and see if the noise is in the clutches.

If still has high pitch noise and have ruled out clutch noise as posted above and ,I have had a couple 325's that had the lower cam chain sprocket slotted nut BACK off, allowing sprocket nut to begin to move up against back of stator plate and making clicking noise! Stator plate must be removed and if nut loose you will see it right away! NUT is reverse threads, loctite and tighten! NOT a common problem, but something to consider if you cant locate noise. Good luck

Thanks guys...
I just finished putting the bike back together and am not too worried about the noise right now as I am now elbow deep into my TrailBlazer. The noise was happening at extreme slow idle only. Anything a little higher and it would disappear. The side cover was off at one point while it was running and the noise was deffinately not coming form that side. It was running a little too slow at idle so I bumped it up a bit so it would stay running instead of keep quitting. I'm trying not to kill the brand new batt. with so many re-starts. The noise is gone, but I'm sure the cause of the noise still exsists. Only have one more weekend to use the bike before it gets moth-balled for winter. I may check deeper into the nosie at that time.
