Default comparing efi to carb 500 sportsmans

Hey guys ,been a while.Ijust bought a 07 left over 500 sportsman efi deluxe,in NORTHERN MAINE ON vacation riding up there.Ireally love it,the clutching is much better than the 05,it goes real slow in low,and the engine braking is less harsh.
Riding side by side with my wife on her 05 carb,we raced and the two machines were real close with only a slight edge to the 07 efi[dealer says it will get better after break in.]Fuel mileage it gives the hat to the efi.On the northern MAINE trails around MADAWASKA,and STAGATHA YOUR IN THE THROTTLE DEEP ALOT.Wide open farm road riding etc ,when it came time to fuel up the EFI took a gallon less. the 05 had a new airfilter installed]
It starts right up and no choke to guess at.Well it looks like im gonna like the efi better, until it breaks and i cant take it apart like a carb.[actually never had any problem with any one of my POLARIS ATV CARBS ]Thought id give you all a heads up on the slight fuel mileage improvement
On a side note if you can get up to Northern MAINE you will not find better riding, and i ride statewide.

EFI is here to stay, early wiring connection problems and adjustments pretty well done, more EPA friendly! Even or VESPA line on some models are EFI. Just wondering how long 2-strokes will be with us! We also sell KTM, HUSKY, and EFI is hitting strong! Put a KTM super duke between your knees,GOOSEBUMPS!

I really dont care for the extra expense of EFI and Im planing on getting a 2008 sportsman 500H.O. next riding season. seems to be the perfect Atv for me that is. But the EFI does sound nice If you ride during the winter or high altitude.
but dial a jet might just be answer to those problems. I just hope they dont axe the sportsman 500H.O too soon.

My new 500 EFI would only go about 40 MPH, WOT, the first week. I asked my riding buddy if the EFI had a governor in it so you can't go full speed before it's broken in, and he said yes. He owned a Polaris dealership for a year ('06-'07) and usually knows what he's talking about. He was right about that one. The second and third week I got it up to a steady 50+ MPH and actually hit 55 just for a moment. I was more gentle on my '06 and don't know if it went slow like that at first.

My last 500 EFI went about the same(?) distance on a 4.1 gallon tank as my previous H.O. on a 5.25 gallon tank. I guesstimating it's about 25% better on gas. Plus it has 4-5% more horsepower. My new EFI got vapor locked or something last week, but it ran great until then and runs good again. On my non-H.O. 500 and on my H.O., I always had to fiddle with the carbs in the winter just to get them to idle right, and turn them back in summer. I enjoyed not having to do that and play with the choke the last two years.

I wanted to put that in the first post, but my post disappeared the first time I tried it, and I left it out the second time. @#$% bugs in the system.

I would of guessed on her 05. The EFI is only rated at 1.5 HP more than the H.O

EFI=36hp
H.O 34.5hp .

The EFI Deluxe is 773lbs while the H.O is 715lbs.

I beat a 07 EFI 500 X2 pretty good with my 2001 H.O but the the X2 is 100lbs heavier and I think was turning its larger 26" stock tires.

Polaris (2007)

Hawkeye 300=17
trailblazer 330=19 hp
Phoenix 200=13 hp
sportsman 450=29.7 hp
Sportsman 500 Ho (carB) 34.5hp
Sportsman 500 EFI/x2/Scrambler 500=36 hp
Predator 500 = 48 HP
Outlaw 500 = 48.6 HP
700 EFI= 44 HP
800 EFI/ 800x2 = 50.2 HP

Notice the carb Scambler 500 with 36hp do to a different pipe or air box.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Wide open farm road riding etc ,when it came time to fuel up the EFI took a gallon less. </end quote></div>

The 07 has the smaller 4.1 tank while the 05 has the larger 4.75 tank.

mine is doing well, I let it loose on a gravel road at the Speedo showed almost 60 MPH but my gps said 54.9 so im assuming around 57 top speed, Does it really have some type of break in governor on it ?

Hey RP. If you want a few more mph change the front alignment toe to zero" and double the tire pressure. Marked improvement.

Toe is probably set at 1/8" out for good turning at slow speeds. Will find a previous post that I did on another site and will do it here.
