clutch slips in water?
#1
I've been having some trouble with my clutch slipping when I get into water. It doesn't always happen, but if I run through a good deep whole, or splash hard in a couple in a row my belt starts to slip and I go no where...I thought adding the clutch kit would keep this from happening, it has helped but hasn't completely fixed things. I took it to the local Polaris and they couldn't find anything wrong.
Is this common? Any suggestions on how to fix this?

if you're just sitting in the water for a while and the belt slips your belt cover gastket is bad or your plug is leaking. This gasket is like 15 bucks. If it only happens when you are at speed and splashing alot I would say you are splashing water into the belt snorkle. If that is the case get a taller snorkle or slow down. Good luck. hope it helped. No matter what clutch kit you put in it, the belt/clutch doesn't need to get wet.

If cheapskate is correct and you are getting water splashing up into the belt vents, try fablicating baffles out of foam and gluing them to the insides of the plastics to block the water splash...
Also, cheek the rubber connections between the clutch case and vent tubes for leaks, these can come loose or crack causing the problem.

Thanks for the replies guys. If it isn't raining when I get off work I'll try and see if I can figure out whats leaking. Its really weird how it happens because it doesn't seem to be consistent with its slipping. Thursday I went to a local ATV park with little to no rock but plenty of mud and water. I went for the first hour or so thru anything I wanted without any problems with the clutch slipping. Then I hit a hole that was only 4 ft long but about 2 ft deep and it slipped on me. After it started to catch again I went thru stuff twice as bad without any issues. Then on the way back to my rig I found a long strait with mild whoops with 6" or less deep water scatered around which was enough to make it start slipping after 4-5 good splashes. Its irritating as much as anything. I hate sitting there for 5-10 min while it dries out enough to move again when this happens.

starting to sound more like a splashing problem...water might be splashing up on the inside of the plastics and then sucked in the vent intake

There is also a gasket on the backing plate around the clutch shafts go, the cover screws to this and that could be the cause. Just my 2 cents. Had an idea!!!!!Take the cover off and run a garden hose behind the plate and see if it leaks.

Thats where mine was leaking, I used a thin layer of fel-pro=pliable automotive form-a-gasket and problem stopped
