Default CV Boot problems...please help!

I have been reading multiple posts/discussions in an effort to find out information about removing the CV joint from my front drive shaft, but am struggling. I have a 96 sportsman and the CV joint slides up and down but won't come off. I have read that there is a clip holding it, but can't see it/access it. Can anyone tell me how to remove the CV joint to replace the boot? I am reluctant to pound on it for fear that I will break it. Thanks for all your help and information.

If you remove the Grease. you will see it. It is right in the front. This link will take you to the parts. Look at item #2. It is a small ring that is in the front of the Knuckle.

There is a circlip on the the drive shaft that locks in the the back of the cv joint,UNLESS cv is damaged internally or contaminated with rust and dirt, the cv is removed by removing clamp, sliding up boot and a SHARP blow with a hammer on cv joint, should pop off shaft with circlip still on shaft. After cleaning and you slip boot on,ALIGN cv with splines,USE a DEADBLOW hammer or have someone hold block of wood against cv shaft,HIT SHARPLY to seat back on shaft, should go up and down and stop at circlip! Circlip could be deformed,if is REPLACE.

Thanks for your quick replies. Ihave been sliding the cv joint up and down the shaft . I may be way off but I believe the clip is inside the cv joint and will not be accessible until I pound off the the cv. Unfortunately the shaft is still mounted to the quad and is very uneasy to persuade. Let me know if their is another trick or if it is just brute persuasion. I am nervous to pound on the outside of the cv for fear of damaging it. Thanks again for your help.
