If you have a bike that is a EFI ( fuel injected ) then you have a ECM , if you have a carb model then you have a PDM . Both are very different .</end quote></div>
I have a CARB model 2006 Sportsman 450 (two of them) and in the Polaris Factory manual they Call the Sure Power Ind. Box (Black Box)a ECM.................So they are not just in EFI models....Caper........

Maybe they changed something as my Polaris manual shows ECU in EFI and PDM for carb . I bought my carb over EFI as I did not want a ECU machine .

Okay Guys, I think we have made some progress:
After the quad has sat for quite awhile (over night, a day or two), when first turned on, everything comes up correctly for maybe 60 seconds - then craps out back to the blank speedo.
If I disconnect the negative battery terminal, and then reconnect it, the SSCB seems to reset (not good enough for a 60 seconds of work, but enough for the speedo dial to move downward and to get that clicking sound you get when turning these things off - then nothing).
So... thinking the problem must be in the darn PDM, I TOOK THE OTHER 2006 SPORTSMAN X2 500 EFI HO APART! And swapped PDMs... and the bad quad worked fine!
Putting the bad PDM into the good quad made the good quad bad - nothing worked.
Using my extraordinary powers of deduction and logic, I came to the obviously elementary conclusion that the PDM is bad!
So this sent me on a quest for a new PDM. While looking, a came across an old topic on this forum about recalls - this sure sounds like it should be a recall. I called a dealer to have the VINs checked and he said "no recalls on this model".
So now I have a couple more questions:
1) Does this sound like a recall item, how can I find out (I already checker all the old postings and letters).
2) If not a recall item, where can I get a new PDM (or two) - cheap?
Suggestions?
Thanks

Call one or two more dealers................Some may replace it free of charge.............When my second one went ...I bought the ECM and later the dealer phoned me back that night to tell me to bring the old one back for a refund........So my point is ........Even though the dealer said NO!!!!.......Some dealers will get there money back for the part and Polaris may cover the labour in replacing it........Check it out...Caper......

NETTOZ-
It seems like I am having the exact same problem as you are with my '06 SP 500 HO EFI (Browning Ed.). I joined the forum today when I read your posting. Sorry for it's length, but it may shed some light on your situation as well.
Here is my situation: This weekend I went to use the 12V outlet on the headlight pod for a small portable air compressor. It just so happens that I had the ATV's battery plugged into a BatteryTender doing a trickle charge. Not sure if I had the compressor "On" or not, but I then then went to start the ATV and as soon as I turned the key to the "start/fire" position, I heard a click-pop like a fuse had blown. Immediately nothing worked on the speedo and no fuel pump noise just before starting. It was completely dead. Obviously, I thought I had blown a fuse. But, as you already surmised, there are no fuses on this machine. Only the SSCBs which are located in the PDU (infront of radiator). I have the shop manual for this machine and that is what it said.
I tried troubleshoot for a good long time. Apparently you can reset the SSCBs by toggling the key and the RUN/Kill (red) switch. The manual was not very clear about this process so I was toggling both back and forth several times. Finally, after one of my key turns, I heard the fuel pump come on and the speedo went through it's diagnostics mode. Then the battery icon came on and flashed for maybe 10 secs and then all went dead again. I screwed around with it some more until I finally pulled the battery out and tested it's voltage. The battery tender said the battery was fully charged which I confirmed at 12.6V. I put the battery back in and tried to start the ATV. This time after turning the key the speedo just flashed all of it's screen, heard some clicking sounds and then everything went dead again.
I tested the battery voltage again while it was connected and it was already down to 10.5V. That just didn't seem right to me, so I disconnected the battery and connected a car battery jumper to the power and ground leads of the ATV. Turned the key and the ATV started and the speedo was working perfectly.
After that calmed my fears of having a bad PDU or ECM, I charged the battery (Polaris stock battery made by YUASA YB30L-B flooded)back up with the battery tender till it said it had a full charge. Tested it again and just watched the voltage drop from 12.5V all the way down to 10.5V in a matter of about 5 minutes. Not good.
So, it appears that I may just have a bad battery. I am taking it in to a local BatteriesPlus and have them test it and replace if necessary with a sealed AGM one this time. Perhaps my battery was going bad for awhile, although I have never had trouble with it starting before, and the load I was putting on it just made it go out. Perhaps you should test your battery too and try to start your X2 with a car jumper to see if it will respond like mine did before spending money on a new PDU or ECM.
I'll let you know what turns up with my battery when I get it tested. Good luck.
