I just bought a polaris 4x4.I have no idea of the year,it looks pretty old.It says 400 on the front but all othe decals are worn off.So I assume it's a 400,liquid cooled, automatic. With abosolutly no power, the starter button is quirky,as I've not been able to turn it over via the button, but saw it started with the button before purchasing.First I'd like to thank everyone for helping me and inviting me in,thx.
1-does polaris put out a factory service manual?or are we stuck with the genaric haynes type manuals?
2-I'm assuming the starter problem is in the button,is there something silly i'm missing?like a switch or button under the cover?
3-idle is too low and won't idle, not sure I want to touch the carb untill I know why it has no power.
4-lack of power, best case I'd say it's getting flooded,as the throddle responce seems very slow.worst case would be shot rings and a total rebuild.
5-best parts, rebuild kits and where to buy them.
ok,I need sleep, thx again for the help.

can you get it started? If you can rebuild the carb. if that does'nt work change the air filter and finally if that does'nt work take the silencer off and clean it out.I encountered the same issues on my scrambler when i got it.this is info is for 2 strokes

is it 2 or 4 stroke? By "no power" do you mean it won't move, won't move through the rpm range, or it will only creep? To check the starter switch just hotwire the starter. If that works, its either a switch or solenoid. If it is a 2 stroke, it sounds like a gummed up carb. Try to put sea foam additive in gas. I have cleaned up many a johnson boat motor carb with it. If it is a 4 stroke, I'd still say it sounds like a carb gummed up. Is it smoking bad, (if a 4 stroke), then it might need rings. I've never seen a motor become substantially weaker because of rings unless it is burning so much oil it is fouling the plug. Hope this helped.

it's a 4 stroke, soaking seafoam now, would be nice not to have to tear it open right after buying it.can pull start pretty easy, does the motor normally like it has a stuck lifter?seems noisey to me,but this is my first 4-wheeler so I don't have much exp to go on.the muffler makes it sound like a 2-stroke.motor seems oil coated so probly has a bad gasket or 2.and it's a 4x2 concentric drive, sounds expensive to fix, lol.known problems with this type of drive?still my biggest issue is finding out what year it is and if polaris distributes the factory service manual. After getting one for my landcruiser it made things so much easier, best $150 I've ever spent.1200+ pages vs. 200 page haynes manual.thx for the info, keep it coming plz.
