You'd know if the piston skirt fell off. You'd usually have aluminum pieces in your exhaust pipe. Rejet and tune before doing anything to rule out detonation. Check the buttons. It's a common issue on machines with time. Change your CB oil and check for coolant contamination as well as metal pieces. Drain it into a screen. Trust me, you can't change it enough.
Piston slap doesn't always result in a power loss because the piston just rocks in the bore due to the piston skirt being too small, but the rings continue to seal. That's why on some engines the slap goes away when the piston warms up and expands.
Being 2 strokes, they are pretty tough engines. Barring lack of lubrication due to pump failure (unlikely) or owner lubrication stupidity, they'll run until they destroy themselves. But they are easy to fix. Go for the simple probs first. Can't be that bad.

Dumb question what are the primary clutch buttons? Are they something on the main clutch relating to the clutch weights?

THey are the 6 teflon buttons that slide on the spyder assembly
