Default Pull Start - Why?

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: jumbofrank

I can't pull start a 500 unless it's already been running and warmed up. Maybe it's just me being a wimp. I don't know why they even put a pull starter on ATVs you can't pull start with a cold engine with cold oil in it. On winter I tried it and almost ripped the skin off my fingers.</end quote></div>

What if its a warm engine as you just turned it off had a smoke and hit the starter to find no go . Now you can pull it and away you go . I bought the 500 because it has that option . This past winter my battery died out on the sled trails but since I also can pull start it I made it home . There not always cold when you need to start them by hand if something happens out on the trail .

Make sure when pull starting you let the engine help you. Pull the engine past the compression stroke (hard to pull), Rewind the rope and then yank hard. The flywheel will pull the engine through the next compression stroke and help fire the engine.

Sort of like starting a Model T Ford with a hand crank in the 'old days'.
