Overheat fan not working
#1
I recently purchased a used 03 Polaris 500. My first ride showed the overheat fan doesn't work. I cleaned all connections, jumped the fan and the fan works but it will not come on when the temp gets high. What is the problem? Is it one or both sensors? Is it the rectifier (or relay) that is mounted just above the radiator? I am not sure what to do now.

Probably one of two things, either radiator could be stopped up (have you cleaned both sides?) Or sensor shorted out at bottom of radiator which powers up the fan. I've replaced a bunch of these, but dont overlook radiator especially back side. Good luck

If I am not nistaken the sensor on the bottom right of the radiator is a NO sensor that closes when it gets hot completing the circuit. I have shorted the connector going to the sensor in the past and got the fan to run constant in a pinch.

CORRECT does just complete circuit!! But can short out,not allowing completion. Common problem on the 500.

i have a 95 sportsman explorer 400...fan worked but the sensor would not turn it on...caled the dealer and the crazy amount of money they wanted for that sensor was sooooooo stupid i just wired it direct to a togle, mounted the togle in the alien head and it works great and has been for about 4 years....total cost for parts at napa was under 6.00

Early 400 and 500 models like yours the sensor is at top of radiator, bad place because when coolant level got below sensor it would get hot and short out. Newer model ones at bottom,BUT still can and do fail.
