Hi Everybody!

New to the forum, and to ATVing.

Last spring I purchased a 2008 Sportsman 500 HO... which I have really enjoyed so far.

Anyhow, onto my question...

I'm a maintenance freek on all my equipment. With that in mind, I want to check the acid level (and add water if necessary) in the battery and clean up the terminals in a couple of months, just prior to winter.

I noticed that the battery is really tucked up under the left rear fender. Is it necessary to remove or loosen that fender to remove the battery, or will the battery somehow come out of there without removing the fender?

you dont need to take off or loosen the fender. just take the strap and cover off(if it has a cover) and tip the battery foward as it is tight in thier. welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum DTC. Stendori is right as usual. There are lots of smart guys like him here that make the forum a fount of knowledge. Take the strap off, tip the battery, pull the cover off. It takes less time to do it than it does to say it. Sometimes dirt will pack into the cracks and make it tight, so clean the battery tray out really good anytime you pull the battery. I use a garden hose and blast it as good a I can.

Yea Frank, I see that there is already a lot of dirt around the battery, so I will clean it up the area really well when I pull the battery.

also when you put the cables back on it wouldnt hurt to put some dielectric grease on the connections if you have any to help from long term corrsion or bad connection. just a suggestion.

Yep, I have the dielectric grease. I like to use a small wire brush to clean up the cable ends and terminals and apply a little dielectric grease to them.
