I have an 05 twin 700 and there is some excessive play in the drive shaft between the transmission and the rear gear box. I am contemplating changing out the u-joints but was just curios as to how complex the job would be. Does the gear box have to come out to remove? Can you replace the u-joints like the old automobile u joints or do you have to replace the yoke and all?

Rear propshaft has kits to rebuild, but check parts and labor(even your own) versus new propshaft assy.Rear gearcase must be moved back/removed to allow room to remove/ install propshaft. Spring pin must be removed at transmission end and knocked backwards to remove/ install. Similar to car u-joints.
