850 XP Rear Gearcase
#1
I noticed mine doing this about two weeks ago. It started to make a lot of noise in the back end, a clunking sound, almost like something was rattling around in the rear gearcase. The oil and the level of it looked good. Called the dealer and took it to them on Saturday. They said that it was the cv axle, and when they drove it around the parking lot, it would do it, but not when two of them rode it, one would hang off the back to try and see where the noise was coming from exactly. I guess the weight of 2 people on it changed the angle enough. Anyway, with it in park, if you rock it back and forth, you could see the rear cv joints moving up and down and hear the rattle, clunking sound. The dealer said they would call Polaris on Monday and let me know whats up. I called them monday and nothing. I called them today, Tuesday, and they said they would call Polaris and then call me back. Finally, they called me back and said that as soon as they mentioned it Polaris already knew what they were talking about.
They will call me for an appointment to bring it back in for two new rear driveshafts when they get the parts in.
Moral to the story, if your new 850, and possibly 550 has any clunking noise in the rear end, take it to you dealer at once and have them call Polaris, as they should fix it, since Polaris already knows of this problem. I am really glad that Polaris is stepping up to the plate on this issue.

For only 20 hours and 160 miles it wouldn't have taken much R+D for Polaris to figure out this one imo.
We arn't talking long-term testing here! LOL!

You would think huh? In all the supposed test miles they put into the XP,this didn't show itself?
I think they had a bunch of the gear cases already and decided use them up,then implement a fix after the cases were depleted. Probably decided it would be cheaper to fix them IF someone reported an issue than to delay production and release and change them all out and poop can the cases on the shelves

It kind of makes you wonder??
At least they are going to fix it. I guess that's what I get for getting one of the first ones, LOL!!
Maybe they were in a hurry when putting them together at the factory. Who knows. I still love riding her, though.

Yeah they are going to fix it no questions, they want to keep it quiet. More proof they have known about the problem for awhile IMO. Most likely prior to release.
There was a similar thread on HL started quiet awhile ago, about a problem that Polaris knew about and was considering a recall,at that point is was considered rumor and it appeared no owner discovered it but rather Polaris did. The facts weren't exactly correct, but my dime says this is the problem they were talking about...
I'm not bashing Polaris, they are a business and sometimes in business you have to take your chances,as long as the problem doesn't create a safety hazard.
