Default 99 sportsman 500 problems

Just wondering if anyone can help me. My buddy this weekend was riding his 99 sportsman 500 and ran into some problems. Everything was running fine then all of a sudden he lost power, and couldn't get it to go over 30 mph. Going up hills was a struggle but he finally got it home. I opened up the air filter box and there was a milkey liqued under the filter and the bottom of the compartment was full of oil. I cleaned the air filter and cleaned the carb but it didn't seem to help, in fact it may have ran worse. As soon as we start it and give it some throttle it bogs down and sounds awful. I told him I would post something on this forum, many guys have helped me in the past. Any idea's please let me know.

Thanks.

CHECK valve clearance. .006 intake and exhaust, Check exhaust lobe on cam for wear or damage. Could be source of power loss? Oil clean in tank also? Not overfull/gas contaminated? Keep us posted

i'll have to have my buddy check the oil now. I know when we started it wasn't overfull. We will check the valves also.

Thanks for the reply.
