Yeah, I'm not going to sweat it. I'll just wait untill the vista-lock thing kicks in suddenly and they flip the can ams while going up hill....lol. That actually happened.. anyways, Someone will always have something a little faster or newer than what you have no matter what you ride i guess, just so you are riding.</end quote></div>

The only time my buddy could beat me on his Outy was in a straight out drag race, (this was on my 08 800). On the trails I was actually faster, in the deep mud and water I had to winch him out. Outy's do not like water!
The Outy did get better fuel economy, but we didn't buy these machines for their contribution to a green planet.

Haven't rode with the Outy since I got the 850, will post results on that encounter soon! Well, that is if I ever get it back in one working piece.

Default 800 vs the 850

I was able to ride a XP850 and a XP550 yesterday, the non EPS models. Was a short ride around the Dealers parking lot. First thing I Noticed is at Idle the 850 vibrates and if you punch the throttle just a bit the Whole Bikes shakes for a Sec then smooths out. and the 550 at idle vibrates worse so bad that it shakes the front fenders. Really did not like that.

Once on the go though the 850 was very smooth and fast. Seems like the Drive train is smoother. The Gears easer to shift too, from Park to reverse and back to Hi-Lo.

The 550 shakes so bad at Idle I would not even consider buying one. I am still waiting for the EPS Models to show up, so I can give one a try. I would be Looking to trade my 08-800 in and the Dealer is Looking to scrape 4K out of my pocket, I have only had the 800 since June.

I don't understand why people trade-in ATVs......even worse than trading cars. Especially on a basically new machine. Discovery whatever he is giving you for it you could sell it for more, and probably pretty quick. Even if it is a couple hundred dollars,it isn't really much work. Besides maybe you'll be giving another rider a great deal while making out better yourself .Before my XP got here I started advertising all the free places, forums, craigslist, local boards ect. I knew I had some time so I started high. Once the Xp got close to coming in I dropped the price(still $1100 more than the dealer wanted to give me) and it sold in less than 48hours.

BTW-was the 850 you rode warmed up? Mine idles alot smoother than the 800 did. The only time I notice what it soundslike you are describing is when you quickly hit the throttle from a low speed or stop when the machine is still cold. It kind of does a shutter real quick. Mine doesn't do it when warmed up.

Discovery,
Tell the dealer that you will give him $2500.00 IF he throws in a 15-20% discount on all of the accessories you will want to add to the new one!

I trade in almost every time. For 1, my time is money, and I hate trying to sell from my home. 2, the trade in can be better, just by the amount of taxes you save. 3, it is much easier....simple as that.

Neither machine could have been totally Warmed up.

And I am Still working on the Dealer, I like the 08-800 I have( My first ATV) It is Really the EPS and smoother drive train I am looking for. In this economy the dealer has to be crazy to think I would just right off 4k in 6 months. It is my understanding that the EPS models where just knocked back another 2 weeks on proposed ship dates.

I guess I should of said I don't understand why people trade if they think they are taking a bath...if you are happy with trading that is you business.

But...not every state allows you to reduce the sales tax to what you pay over trade-in on an ATV..cars most places..yes...ATVs not so much. In NC you still pay tax on the full amount. It's a crock, but that is the way it is here.
It all comes down to choice I guess.
Personally I think selling is pretty easy and with the internet it really doesn't take anymore time than the time we spend on here, less actually, lol. Most times you can weed out low-ballers and tire kickers without them even coming to see the machine.
On my 800 the first guy I let come see it was the guy who bought it,and he paid exactly what I asked for it.
Total time I spent to save $1100 was maybe 5 hours(likely alot less really). I don't know about you but I don't make $220 an hour at work.

I agree with most of what you said. I didn't know about the sales tax. Here, we only pay on the difference.

The main problem here is that most people just don't have that kind of cash. Most want the deal of a lifetime on everything they buy.

There is a guy who sells used stuff near here. Most is under $1000, and that is what sells. Anything more and people go to the auction or dealers. Auction place near here has atv's and snowmobiles almost exclusively on most of their auctions. The guy used to work for me, but not runs the auction barn with his dad. Used stuff doesn't get a great price up here.

IMO and experience a dealer(whether it be ATV,Auto, lawn eqiupment, tractors ect, isn't going to give you nearly what it could be sold for privately, regardless of location or local used machine values. Like you said used machines don't bring much money in your area. So likewise the dealer will adjust his sells price on used machines and thus his trade price.
If the dealer regularly gave private party values for machine trades he wouldn't be in business long. My father-in-law used to be a dealer for Polaris as well as several other brands of machines. When a dealer takes a trade he incurs costs that you would not by selling it outright. He must check the machine out(or most likely pay a tech)most likely perform service on it and get it in to reasonably top condition. He does this because now that machine is his reputation. If he just wheeled it to the showroom without thoroughly inspecting it, fixing any problems and then it had issues he would look bad. Would you buy a used machine from a dealer if you knew it wasn't checked out? And if you did and it had a pre-exsisting problem and the dealer said"well it was a trade, your problem now". Would you talk highly of that dealer? How many dealers thoroughly inspect a trade before they give you a price? LIkely none, why? A waste of his or his employees' time if you don't trade the machine. Also another expense it that they pay interest on the floor plan(ie the new machines on the floor waitning to be sold). So the amount of money they give for the trade they either come out of pocket or continue to pay interest on that money while they try to sell the traded machine. So for insurance so to speak they offer much less than retail value, and quite a bit less than private party value for the machine. That way if some hidden problems come up on a few machines they will still average a profit on used machines.
Bottom line if you are happy with deal then that is what counts.

Sorry..I have a bad habit of rambling and getting threads way off topic, lol.
I really try not to do this at least until the original poster has got the info he was looking for.

Personally, I think many (but maybe not all) dealers are taking advantage of the "XP feeding freenzy". Even my dealer (who is small) has sold quite a few 850's already, and has several on order. He's also sold a couple 550's.

I think given some time, the madness will slow down, and the dealers will have to deal a little more. Plus, I would think that the other ATV companies will at least try and get something on the market that can compete with all the features that the XP offers... and it has a bunch!

Plus, during that time, the worst thing that can happen is that Polaris can resolve any existing bugs that may appear. In addition, Polaris may even expand the XP line. I for one would love to see a 650/700 twin XP.

Anyhow, that's how I see it, and what I'm hoping for.
