Winch Cable what size to replace with Synthetic?

I'm definitely not a know it all but I thought it might be tight...I always try to put a piece of electic tape very tightly around the rope first then cut thru the middle to keep the diameter as small as possible to fit thru the hole...Just an idea...

Thanks John,
I'll narrow up the end that goes through the hole somehow. The tape sounds like a good idea after a little trimming to narrow the rope.

Got it to work guys. If you get the 1/4"...
Unravel about 3 inches of rope.
Cut away about 1/3 of the strands from that 3 inches.
Re-tape that 3 inches and hammer it a little flat.
Spray some silicone/teflon spray in the hole.
It should go through easy.
Pull it through, cut off the 3 skinny inches.
Tie a knot, and pull tight
Wind the rope on under tension.
Done.

Thanks for your help John.
Knowing how to do it now, I would buy the 1/4 rope without hesitation.

Oh, and one other thing guys. Naturally, after I had everything put together, I thought "boy, one of those silicone shock bushings or body bushing would make a great "winch saver" on these synthetic ropes".

All good tips guys! I'm going to be replacing my cable with rope VERY soon, after breaking the cable 3 times in the last 2 weeks!
