850 clutching question
#11
You need a clutch kit.Springs and weights. You need that whenever you pipe a polaris.Be very thankful you didn't blow the motor or worse. The reason for the clutch kit is to launch and ride in the rpm range of the pipe.We scrambler guys have to clutch it when we pipe our machines.

Thanks, I have a feeling that you are right. That is why I checked the RPM,I could tell it was revving high, but I think it has a limiter as I have hit it in low range,as I did on my 800. I don't think I'm in danger of the motor letting loose. Unless the limter only works in low? But obviously I want it to be set up right, and to keep the RPMs where the should be. I need to check it an see where it hits it in low, compared to what I saw in high.

You also have new tires I noticed. That with the pipe and stock clutching can have an abnormal effect on your machine. The trannsmission is constantly trying to stay in the stock ranges of the machine, add a pipe and having to creat enough torque for the larger tires and your stressing out the tranny basically. In a bit I will show you 850 guys the results of bad clutching.

Does anybody make a clutch kit for the 850 XP yet?</end quote></div>
polaris makes all sorts of primary springs and weights that are interchangeable on there machines.

Yes, I have 27's vs the stock 26's. There are guys running 31's on the stock clutch set up.
I can tell you the tranny is not stressing at all really,as the clutchs are not upshifting enough under WOT to really even load the tranny anymore that stock IMO,it's less stress I think, the way it is shifting. I assume you meant the clutches not tranny?Yes,if it was upshiting too fast the larger tires and added power would strain the tranny, but that is the problem..it isn't upshifting fast enough IMO,feels like it is breaking the tires loose or the belt is slipping, but it isn't.
I agree that mods affect the clutching, I just haven't seen it be this drastic on a Sportsman with such mild mods.
DCT-like scrambler said, springs and weights are normally interchangeabvle, but I I don't know of anyone who has tested what it may need or is making a "clutch kit" yet. And honestly I wouldn't know where to start, but I guess I may have to learn. It really seems like I just need it to upshift a bit faster to keep the RPMS down a little.

Well scrambler...what do i need to do to speed up the upshift without decreasing top end?
Thanks
Like Dave said, I guess I just need to call Dalton,or maybe the guys at Heelclicker.
I'll wait until after the holidays.

HO,
Yea, this isn't a bad thing at all. You were savvy enough to notice that something wasn't quite right. You know what to do (or not to do) to avoid any "bad stuff" from happening until you get it "tweaked". I can tell you this... that machine is really going to be BAD @$$ when you do get it tweaked. I bet when you get the correct upshift, you are going to gain some nasty mid-range power.

Yes if you call dalton be sure to tell them the wheel size and the type of exhaust and make. It's an Hmf right?, and also tell them if it's full or just a muffler.Oh and call me Mark
