polaris 850vs800
#1
Hi i am new here, I am looking at getting a 2nd atv am looking at a polaris 850 or the 800, I have read here that the 850 is way more of the atv then the 800, but at some of the stores around here they have 08 800's for around $2500 less then a 09 850, would you say that the 850 is worth $2500.
Thanks for any info you can give me

I own an 2008 800, had a chance to ride an 850 and there is no denying that it is a better machine, but that being said the 800 is still an awesome machine. Ride, power etc are great. If money is no object I would get the 850 and upgrade the tires! But if it is your second machine I would opt for the 800 if the price is that much cheaper. Just my thoughts

I'm too tired to type a bunch of stuff right now, so I'll point you to a recent thread in this forum on the exact same subject...

Wow! What a huge difference in price! I would say if you think you would be happy with the power and ride of the 800 then go for it. After reading many of the posts here on the 850 I would be leary as it does have some issues that I'm sure will get resolved next year, but there is no doubt it is much improved over the 800. I always have concerns over first year production, though.

Hi firehog --
Issues for the 850 XP? Would you mind elaborating some on that?
I ask...because I am only aware of two not so big issues...and that is the rear brake lines needing an extra clip or wire tie and poor choice for OEM tires. Other than those...I thought the 850 XP was a solid machine?
Thanks,
biz

Biz-there have been a few confirmed reports of a bad rear axles..apparently machined wrong, and only a batch apparently. Polaris knows about them and fixes them no questions..
Other than that the rest of the "issues" haven't turned out to be anything other than isolated problems any machine can have, and or paranoia...
I know a few have had backfiring during break-in and 2 guys have had the seats come apart, those are the next largest complaints I have seen. 1 guy had a damaged clutch cover seal from the factory and got water on the belt which shredded it..
IMO the XP is doing AWESOME for a first year machine from any manufacturer..alot of people say Polaris can't get a first year machine right,I think they listened and like the reports say, took extra R&D time on the XP..
Of course alot of Polaris' firsts are industry firsts,so ot course it is easier for other manufacturers to watch, note problems and fix them on there "first year" machines..
Look at any other manufacture that brought a first to the industry and you will see they had problems in that area....
For as many changes as Polaris made on one machine I think they did and OUTSTANDING job of working out the bugs....
Of course we need more time to tell the whole story, but so far I say bravo...
And they seem to jumping on the comfirmed real issue(s) and fix them no question..instead of denying them. It's easy to get first year paranoia and think every little noise you hear is a "problem",when it may not be...
