Default New member, a few questions

Hi all,

I've been lurking around the forums for a sometime and finaly joined up. I picked up a 98 sportsman 500 the other day. I already did an oil change thanks to the great post's made by old polaris tech. When I went to my dealer to buy the oil, i asked about a manual, they told me there is no manual for a 98. To me that is BS. I see some on ebay, but i'm not sure which company makes the best one? I would also like to purchase a winch and plow. Unless i'm lookin at the prices wrong, but this will run me about $1000 for a decent one? My local dealer also told me they wont outfit a plow on any machine older than 2000. My last question is about the rig itself. When i first start it up and everything is cold, its hard to get it into gear, doesnt matter what gear i want to put it in, its very hard. But after it warms up for a little while it slides in smooth. Is this normal??

Thanks for any help

welcome to the forum, imo polaris has the best repair manual, chiltons sec.,hynes third.if you have not changed your trans fluid, change to see if it helps your cold shifting, also check your rpm if its too high it might not want to go in cold,as far as your plow, find another dealer, imo year dont make a diff, except faster wear of already worn parts........

Here is a down loadable manual for a 08 500 Sportsman http://www.mediafire.com/?shar...b5142cd2db6fb9a8902bda

The motor and tranny and many other things on the sportsman never changed much so it will still be handy.

I would change the tranny fluid, there are also adjustments on each end of the rods the that go from the shift lever to the tranny you can fool with.

you can download the owners manual from polaris's website for free

as far as plows/winches go a good Warn winch is around $400 depending if you get the XT or RT, and what size you get

and a plow is about the same $400-$500 range or more, depending on what brand you get
