Broke a rear axle on my 2000 425 Xpedition. Was talking to the original owner about parts and he said for the three that he replaced he went to a local shop. THREE axles already and this is the fourth?

Anyone know if the Xpedition have a history of breaking axles? Running 27 x 12 tires, pretty badly worn though, are they too big for this axle? Too much stress?

This one snapped right at the back of the hub.

27" on a 425 is pushing your luck for sure. No one puts 27" on unless they are looking for those crazy swamp holes to play in because they are terrible general trail riding tires,so that compounds the stress on the axle.

A 27" tire alone weights as much as a 25"with the rim.

I wondered about that, with the 27x12 on the back and 27x10 on front, it looks impressive but is hard to steer as well. Can't be helping the front end either.

I downloaded a manual and saw that it calls for smaller tires from the factory.

It came with 25" stock and steel rims. Steel rims plus 27" is as heavy as it gets. I would go aluminum rims with 26" lighter MudLites at most if I over sized.

An Expedition with 27"s??????? WOW! (I think the stockers were 25"s)

It more than likely has wheel specers and those will kill the axles too!!

A stock Expedition was as reliable as my old '95 Magnum425....a rock solid ATV!

I think the best thing you could do is to deep-six those 27's and replace them with 25 or 26's.

Well it looks like my suspicions have pretty well been confirmed. Unfortunately with a broken axle AND the need for new tires, this baby is gonna have to sit for a while.

Maybe you can find someone with stock tires who wants to trade.
