scrambler carb issues STILL!
#1
I have rebuilt a 97 scrambler carb as best i can and cleaned every hole and passage known to man on that thing. I have changed the oil...which still looks bad...and the fuel in the tank is new 93 octane stuff. It barely starts and idles poorly. It also does not have much power. It sounds like it is missing. I have replaced the spark plug with a new one and gapped it at .28. Can anyone help me BEFORE i put dynamite on this rhing and sell it for parts? Thank you!

assuming it must be a 500 4 stroke if he said he changed the oil. does it run the same way in neutral while trying to rev or idle or just in gear under power. did you set the adjustments correctly when you reassembled it?

Sounds like the famous cam went south problem.Check the cam and set the valves it the cam is ok.

What adjustments? It idles rough...sounds ok just off idle..but then sounds worse trying to get to WOT and will not get there. I havent touched the cam or valves since i bought this thing years ago. PLease dont tell me i have to gut the motor!

take the valve covers off and see if you can see the cam lobes. there is has been a known problem on earlier 500 cams (could be other machines as well). they are known to just sorta disappear and get wore down quite a bit. if the lobes are ok then reset the valve clearances and try again. if they arent ok atleast you found the problem
