Default HELP needed

Last snow storm we got I plowed 2 driveways just fine. We got a wicked cold spell and my sportsman would only run on full choke and would not idle. I didn't think much of it since it was -15.

We just got another snow storm and I want to plow my driveway but the quad will not start.

This is what happens. It will turn over but not run, sometimes it will back fire real loud. If I pull the air filter off it can hear it chuggin and sometimes blue flames will come out of the air intake tube.

So far I have replaced the spark plug, old one was messed up. I have re-pulled the plug and it is wet so hit it with starting fluid and dried it with a lighter, still good as new. I sprayed starting fluid into the cylinder and air intake. I even tried spraying starting fluid into the cylinder and quickly putting the plug back in, NOTHIN.

It is getting fuel because I can smell it and I am getting spark also, it just won't fire.

I am all out of ideas and really can't afford to take it to polaris.

any suggestions?

thanks.

If you are getting fuel and you are getting spark and it backfires sometimes, my first reaction is to look at the timing. Putting starting fluid in it is probably not going to solve anything, although I admit I would probably try that too if it were me.

ya, I thought it could be timing. So can I check that or adjust that myself? And how would the timing just get screwed out of the blue?

Thanks!

I haven't done it on an ATV before, but others on here have. I am speaking from experience with engines in general. I know that you can do it yourself with a timing light and a few tools, if you are mechanically inclined at all.

Someone will probably reply to this topic with some guidance for you.

you said the choke was all the way out to run..........Maybe it's just the choke cable hung up in the outer housing or still frozen........Does the choke move in and out freely?
......Caper..........

yup choke works fine, I checked it. Anyway even if it was a choke problem I would think it would run, just not smoothly. I am getting no firing at all.

May be with all of the plowing you may have gotten water in the fuel system some how. Try putting a can of "HEAT" in the gas tank. Make sue you put in the correct amount.
Just a thought.

what year is this quad? there is a problem with certain years and cam lobes disappearing. try taking the valve covers off and taking a look at the cam...see if there is any scoring or the lobes are just missing!
