efi questions

well im thinking about trying to get one of those fancy 550 XP machines towards the fall of this year but im wondering if the EFI components can stand up to mud/water. do they eventually give way to the inevitable water seepage? or are they pretty water tight. i can work on carb motors but cant afford to take it to a shop if something goes wrong.

my father in law just bought a new 500 HO and the dealer actually turned him away from the EFI models. dunno if that was because of a different profit margin on the carb model or what. it has just got me wonderin about it.
but i agree. if there is/was a problem with EFI there should be some posts about it by now

The throttle body does have some electrical wire going to it. Its the Throttle position sensor (TPS) you can always spray it with electrical water proofing spay for back up.
I spray the stuff on every connection I can fined on the ATV.

We have run EFI on our motorcycle (ZX6 636, dual injected, methanol, kawi race ECU) powered mini sprint race cars for the past five years. We were also reluctant to switch from FCR Flatslide racing carbs to EFI as I was very good at tuning, jetting and working with the carbs but the EFI has been awesome. We run in very harsh conditions, after a track is watered the clay covers the car and gets everywhere requiring a powerful wash to get clean including all the electronics. When it is dry the dust is brutal so overall very harsh conditions and the EFI has been great.
The only problem which was my fault was with the Throttle Position Sensor when I removed a fuel line and gave it a bath in methanol. Oh ya the other problem was when some idiot drove into us ripping the throttle bodies off the engine as well as smashing them and putting a hole in the block. Thank goodness I am a calm guy... not. Anyway the EFI systems are simple, work extremely well and hold up, I am very happy with EFI on the anything I own.

I'd stick with Carb way to many problems on EFI my dealer told me the same thing you don't need a quad full of sensors .
While in Park, my atv starts w/o problem, idles w/o problems, rev's. up to high rpm w/o problems. However, once I start down the road it lugs to a complete stop, dies, backfires occasionally and requires restart. This happens repeatedly, can't go for more than a few hundred yards and the machine just slows to a stop and dies. I have tried to run it at constant speeds-slow-fast-and in-between speeds without success. No fault codes, just a sick puppy for some odd reason. Please advise! 2007 Sportsman 500EFI/HO
I have a 2005 Polaris 800 Sportsman that runs like crap. It starts and runs fine,,, then after awhile it sounds like it misses and pops... kind of like when you try backing up without that override button pushed in. It goes for awhile like that, then will run ok again. It goes back and forth, running good for awhile, then running crappy. I checked the vent hoses and they seem fine. Is it possible that the computer part for the fuel injection could be messed up and need servicing? I am considering selling it because I dont ride it much.....mostly to plow snow in the winter and would need to get it cleaned up and running like it should. I would like to see if it can be taken care of on my own as taking it to a dealer will cost more than I want to pay I am sure. Any ideas would be greatly sppreciated.
Used my Polaris 2500# winch for the first time today and when I put a hard pull on it my 2006 700 EFI Stalled. I was keeping the RPM up and it stated to run rough and then stalled. I could not get it to start again until I jumped it with my tractor. It would turn over but not start. The Battery voltage on the dash read 11.6 volts. Any Ideas?
I JUST BOUGHT A 2006 POLARIS SPORTSMAN 700 EFI AND AT FULL THROTTLE @ ABOUT 35-40 MPH IT CUTS OUT BUT IF YOU BACK OFF THE THROTTLE TO 3/4 IT RUNS FINE. JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS? THANKS
Being that your ATV is EFI it is harder to guess what it could be, might be water in the gas, old gas, might need a new plug, or something that the dealer must "plug in" to find.....
The first thing I would suspect from your discription is the TPS sensor.

I have a 04 700efi sportsman, it idiols fine fuel pressure is 40psi, when i give it some gas it dieds? ANY help would be great. fuel filter is new and installed in the right direction.
was running it just fine and then it just dies on me. I checked for codes and it gave me the 51,52 codes for fuel injector problems. I checked the fuses and the 15 amp fuse was blown. i replaced it and it started for less than a second and just blew the fuse again. Please Help! Thanks
I have gone through the woes of the fuel pressure issue with the 700 EFI recently. I took the pump out and basically pin pointed the regulator as the issue. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could possibly find a replacement regulator, whether from Polaris or as an aftermarket part. Don't really want to have to go through buying the whole fuel tank, as suggested by my Polaris Dealer. Thanks for any help.
I've got an 08 Sportsman 500 EFI and have had a couple of issues with it stalling at low RPM's (say, at the end of the driveway when I switch to reverse back up when plowing) lately. I'll admit, I did let it sit with a near-empty tank for about two months (and it was cold at night) so I poured a bottle of isopropyl dry gas in it and it's been okay my last three nights of plowing.
Anyone have any ideas what else could be causing it (if anything else)? I had the MPT harness replaced (on the last day of the warranty) because it was stalling and then sometimes the starter wouldn't turn over when I would try to start it.
Any ideas? I'd like to have something more concrete before I get stuck out in the woods with it this spring. Thanks!
got a 550 xp and was going to burn around the yard today and the temp was -20 celcius, turned the key and the machine just turned over and over and over it fired but didnt keep running. I did that five times and eventually keeped running.
I thought for being fuel injected it would strart a lot better, I was not to impressed
I just bought a used sportsman 2006 700efi (40hrs).
the check engine light came on the second day i rode it.
the check engine light comes on and goes off. no rhyme or reason?
bike seems to run fine.
downloaded the manual.
followed the directions to check the efi defaul codes. tried numerous times to access the efi diagnostic mode to no avail. (yes i did it correctly).
finally after several attempts the i get to the WAIT screen...NO CODES. now i am really perplexed.
disconnect the battery. let it sit for a few minutes.
reconnect the battery.
fire it up and check engine light comes on.
let it run for a minute, check engine light goes off...
turn off the bike.
perplexed.
THE MACHINE WILL NOT REV UP AT ALL, NOT RIDEABLE. Polaris Mechanics have you seen this before? I've never heard of the injector going? Will not idle or start unless i pump throttle and keep puming to keep it running but it runs like garbage. Tried new gas, made sure gas was getting to fuel rail and pressure checked incoming fuel to rail. Machine only has 350 miles on it.
I agree, make certain the battery is fully charged before doing anything else. Low battery voltage could be messing with the electronics, which on an EFI machine control everything!
If I run at a steady rpm for a while and let off the bike seems to stumble pretty bad. It recovers pretty quickly but it does it pretty regularly. I have put the display on tach to see how far it falls but the tach doesn't seem to react quickly enough to show it. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
my 500 efi does the same.
I Do a steady speed let off the throttle and it seems like the rpms decline so low that it stops the motor. on occassions it recovers the rpm and runs good after.
I was told the throttle cable had to much free play, so i tightened up the cable just a hair more from the handle bar adjustment and it was a little to much so i backed it off and it still isnt enough.
You have to watch when you do adjust the cable that you turn the bars full left and right after . and make sure the rpms dont go up or down that was the problem i had after adjustment.
Have to play with the throttle to have the correct freeplay with the correct idle speed. around 1250 or so.
Im running on one cylinder. Im getting good spark from the left side, but none on the right. Every once and a while I get a spark from both, but now Im only getting one. I checked my coil on another bike and it worked fine. What could this be?And I do have an extra ground ran to the frame for my coil mount.

Spdecat-Do that search for carb problems...you will find just as many...and guess what carbs are so simple right? Read some of the carb posts where they "don't know what could be wrong".."even the dealer can"t figure it out" ect ect...IMO the biggest problem with EFI,and carbs for that matter, is owner's who don't understand how they work nor how to maintain and troubleshoot them...
All machines now days use electronics, even the carb'd bikes...so while you might get fuel without electronics you will not get spark...last time I checked you need spark..check it out there are sensors on carb'd bikes too...
I have nothing against either type but IMO if the dealer is pushing a carb machine it is probably because they have a harder tie moving them now days,so when they see an opportunity they take it...
