need some help...was riding along and it died..sonded like the exhaust got real loud and then quit...tried to start and it wouldnt turn over and the pull start would not pull...after a couple trys it would turn over but not start.....pulled the plug and it is sparking...I do have compression when i hold my thumb over the hole for the spark plug.....not sure if its enough...carb has gas..check my counter balance oil and it was not showing on the dip stick....any ideas???

Sounds to me like the piston skirt broke off. Dropped down in the ower end and lodged so you couldn't pull it over. After a few tries you dislodged the chunks of skirt...but it's still down there...not good. Don't try starting it anymore, you'll cause more damage if this is the case.

i agree completely. 2 strokes use the skirts for timing. if one isnt there then the "vavle" timing is essentially off. take the intake off and the exhuast manifold off. then look inside the two holes while slowly turning the flywheel. should be able to tell if a skirt is broke

When they are running, quit, and all of a sudden wont turn over, that is usually real bad. I bet you seized the piston, and when the engine cooled down the piston let go and you could pull it over again.
Your piston is most likely scored pretty good and I bet a compression test will show low compression. Get your wrenches out

Update: I took it to a guy I know for repairs. The piston broke/shattered/came apart. I also got a hole in my crankcase. Not sure if it's worth fixin. Thinking about parting out and starting over.
This hasent been a good atv year for me, My 700 was stolen and now the 400. maybe I'll get a mountain bike..............
