Default 850 XP and backfiring

It's been a good day. I was having backfiring problems with my 850 from day one. I did the throttle cable adjustment procedure as described in the owners manual keeping the adjustment to the specs. I haven't had a chance to take it for a run until today. We put on about thirty miles and not a backfire. Even riding two up the 850 really performs. We were up in the snow along with a 600 Grizzly and a 660 Grizzly. The AWD pretty much impressed the Yamaha owners. My buddy with the 660 took my 850 for a spin when we got back down and was very impressed to say the least.
Take care,
Dave

Default 850 XP and backfiring

Hi HO
I'm thinking that the guys that did have backfiring issues that went away on their own were due to the cables being to tight and loosening up a bit. I tried to loosen them up too much the first time and it still backfired but when adjusted to the specs the problem left.
Take care,
Dave

Too loose is what causes an issue.....too tight will just cause a high idle.

Default 850 XP and backfiring

I had my dealer come and pick mine up when it was backfiring, they said that they adjusted the throttle. Since then, it has only backfired about 3 or so more times, and I have rode it a lot since then, and it hasn't backfired for quite a while now.

I have 22 miles on the clock and my machine backfired twice this past Sunday. I'm going to adjust the throttle cable when I go to the garage next time.

By the way, this ATV is AWESOME!! It took almost 20 minutes to start in -15 degree weather thought, which is understandable since it was sitting outside all night. The best part about it was that I didn't have to clean it because I rode in hard packed snow all day

IronBear, if the engine spins over it should start right off with EFI. Just like an EFI car if it spins it starts even -20 or more, just as long as the battery has the "juice" to crank it.

I agree magnum, but other machines, besides mine took over 20 minutes to fire up. It tried to start, but I didn't want to run the battery down. There were other machines (Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Kawasaki) that didn't start either, both carb and EFI. The battery voltage most likely dropped due to the cold weather.

My machine was backfiring this weekend too, and I need to perform that cable adjustment. Other then that, this machine is AWESOME..I FINALLY broke the 40 mile mark..LOL
