Default Setting valves

Unfortunately the timing inspection hole shows a rusted wheel inside. Therefore, I cont see the TDC timing mark. I observe the valves open and close. I know Im on the compression stroke, and I am inserting a small wire in the spark plug hole and watching that go up until it stops. Maybe it has another slight bit but IM at my best. Can I call that TDC to adjust the valves?

Also, the exhaust valves share a rocker. Do I need 2 .06 feeler guages or can I do one at a time?

Thanks!

YES on all counts. The wire trick will get you almost spot on IF CAREFULL! This has been done for years! Just wath for intake lifter to start to rise and check wire to where travel stops! 2 feeler guages needed to keep exhaust rocker from having unequal pressure when adjusting valves, just insert one if not too tight and adjust the other valve to .006,then adjust the other to.006. Same clearance setting on intake valves.

Yeah, you definitely need two feeler gauges for the exhaust!

why not just remove the recoil cover and clean off the flywheel? maybe even paint the TDC mark so its easier to see thru the hole? just an idea.

Probably the best idea,BUT sometimes I'm lazy too and give the EASY way out!! Actually forgot to say that you can also just pull cam cover plate and when cam index pin at TOP CENTER of head, tdc dead on!

another easy tip, take the clutch cover off, this way you can rotate the motor slowly, by hand, by turning the primary clutch. it will also allow you to sort of lock it in position so it doesnt rotate one way or the other.
