How do I remove the Starter?
#1
It appears my starter is going bad or needs overhaul, turns over slowly when I spin it by hand and turn the key. Is there a step by step removal process? I don't know how to get to the second bolt? Thanks for helping. btw. its on my 06 sportsman 500 efi

Seems kinda early for a starter to go out,but possible! Also is battery fully charged? If you have recoil and starter bendix off, you might just give it a little "love tap" with a small hammer or wrench while turning over with the key.(could have a small flat spot on armature shaft causing it to bind up) If doesnt help then either repair/replacement may be needed. For me the easiest way to the bottom bolt is just remove front clutch, front clutch seal plate, and move backing plate back far enough to remove bottom bolt,BUT I have a lift and the tools and I just dont fight these things anymore! Other members should chime in on their ways of removing starter, may be easier for you! Good luck

Thanks so much for the help, I removed and re-installed the starter from the top!!! It really wasn't too bad, just had to remove the air box and air tube side covers and seat it was a slow process to remove the "hard" bolt although patientce pays off.

Thats how I did it also, much easier than fooling with the clutches and back plate. Now take your starter apart and 90% of the time its just a corroded brush that is stuck and just needs to be cleaned and lubed and your good to go.

Did you check the battery capicity? You can check the battery capicity, disconnect the spark plugs and put a volt meter on the battery, crank it over, it should read about 9 volts or more. Just a thought.
