Default Another 3X4 Sportsman 500 HO

Hello everybody. I have searched the blogs, but I still can't figure this one out. 2002 Sportsman 500 HO, left front tire will not engage. I have had the hub apart about 6 times. I am refilling half full with Polaris oil. Everything is clean and looks good. There is power to the coil. I took the other side apart to see if the coil had about the same pull, and it did. My speedometer does not work, but the odometer does. I have put the brown/white wire to ground with no results. Will the coils go weak after time? Thanks for looking.

welcome to the forum. are you using the correct hub polaris oil when repalcing the oil? any way of trying to use the good side coil on the left side to try to see if it will make that side work? just a thought. seems to me (just a guess) that if its getting power to it and its having the same pulling power then it should be good. imo.

Yes the coils do go bad, when you have it apart, turn the key on and the awd switch on and see if the magnet pulls the armature plate to it, you should have to pull pretty hard to remove armature plate from magnet, if magnet is working it c ould be armature plate , are the tangs on the plate ok? If both of those are ok check the hilliard clutch, see if all rollers are free when you twist it to the lock position, is the spring on the clutch ok?

I know coils can go bad, but will they get weak with time? The armature plate sticks pretty good if you ask me. Tangs are fine also. Yes I'm using the correct oil. I have had the Hilliard clutch apart to verify any galling or grooves (I am a machinist by trade). I have a new coil and plate on order, but I am still not certain that they are the problem. Thanks again.

Is it something else ,like a left front CV joint or u joint. Is the left drive axle turning?

Since you have one side working on the front drive, that means you speedo just needs the $50 "Hall Effect" sensor at the right front disk brake replaced to ge the speedometer needle working again.

Left axle is turning fine. I can put the front bumper up to a tree with the wheels on ice and get a pretty good view of everything. Thanks for the info on the hall sensor, but I still have not found it yet. ...................I can't figure this out and it is driving me crazy. :-)

Hello again, the 500 is still not fixed. Coils were both fine (I switched everything from one side to the other, and then the RF wheel would not work). So then I just switched the hubs, and I am back to the LF not working again. ....So what could go wrong with the hub? ...It has no moving parts...Could it have gone oversize?..I have the tools to measure the inside bore if I knew what it was supose to be. Thanks again for your thoughts. Dale.

Its critical that the hub is tighten to a specific ft/Ibo torque, I forget what it is off hand.
