I think it is because Polaris has yet to enter the 21st century.Probably have never heard of Aluminum, or anything lighter than cast iron for that matter.I think a Polaris has a Gerbil inside one of those little wheels for a engine(at least thats how they run). I really dont know why they make them so heavy, its not like anyone is gonna carry it off anyhow, its a Polaris for god sakes

Regarding the weight differences between 2000 and 2001. I can tell you that this is not limited to the Scrambler, other models such as the Explorer have suddenly gotten heavier. This was the subject of past posts and the conclusion was that Polaris updated the weight of all of their models. I for one sent an e-mail to Polaris asking them this very same question and heard not a peep.
In general Polaris is not a ground breaker in making light machines. This takes engineering and increases fabrication costs. Likely reasons for Polaris shying away from such changes. Only competition and lost market share will make them change their philosophy.
Personally, I like Polaris machines. They've influenced the market considerably, however, creativity and marketing can only take you so far. ATV's like Kawasaki's 650 will hopefully spur Polaris on to produce more advanced machines.

Hey guys~
I too do not understand how/why Polaris' "sport" quad is approaching 600lbs! My 96 Scrambler was said to weigh 490 lbs from the brochure! Does the 500 engine and concentric drive really add 80 lbs!?? To begin with, Polaris quads are generally heavier than the competition. It seems to me that Polaris is going backwards by adding even more weight! C'mon Polaris...If you can be the first manufacturer to come out with the CVT tranny, all disc brakes, and state of the art IRS, you sure the hell should be smart enough to use more aluminum!!
