Default Starter issues on a 08 700

The starter on my 700 has become cantankerous.

I've got 410 miles on the machine (new 08 in january 09). The starter worked great for the first 300 miles, then it started spining but wouldn't engage with the first turn of the key, but would engage on second turn of key. Now three turns of key to get it to engage. This only happens when engine is warm to hot (fan running). It fires right up first turn of the key when cold.

Any ideas ???????

I experienced the same situation on my 07 700.I've recently traded for an xp,therefore I wasn't able to diagnose it correctly. My mindset was a voltage issue, either at batt connection or starter/solnoid connection, more than likely just resistive from water mud etc.Put a volt/ohm meter on the starter power connection while it cranks without engageing, comparing the voltage to when it does crank. If my theory is correct, you will see a different voltage potential of a few volts.

you would need at least 12.5 volts to start it. you should be able to see what your voltage is in the dia. mode. if this is stilll under warranty i would be taking it or least mentioned it to them to see what they say w/out costing you any money. imo.

My 700 started doing that, right before the battery took a dump, new battery and all is fine.

Checked all of the battery condition- Cold 12.7v starts right up. 3 minute warm up 12.5 v starts right up. Ridding for 30 min. 12.5 v and had to turn the key off and on three times before starter engaged. (starter spun up but gear did not engage.

This machine has 31 hrs since brand new. I talked to the dealership and they said that they hadn't seen this problem on any other 700s or 800s, but they were going to call Polaris and see what the company line is. Haven't heard back yet.

We'll see..............

My X2 does the same thing when it is hot.I took it in when it was still under warranty and dealer said starter is getting too hot because exhaust is so close.

If its under warranty, make them replace the bendix, its inside the right engine cover.

Plumbob: did Polaris have a fix?

I talked to the service dept today, He's got the problem posted to Polaris's tech line but hasn't recieved an answer back. Hopefully, Monday I'll have an answer.

The 700 still under warranty. So we'll see......

Thanks for the info guys.

No,polaris did not have a fix and of course "never heard of it".The dealer drove it awhile and took it apart while hot and said the starter drive was so hot he could barely hold on to it.They also said no signs of wear or metal shavings or anything to indicate a problem. That was last fall and now I'm out of warranty but no trouble since then.I'll probably try to fab some sort of heat shield before summer.
