Front Diff. Clicking
#1
Hey all, new to the forum, glad I joined.
Just over the weekend I was out riding and came to a big set of roots sticking out the ground. I attempted to go up and over in 2wd but only to lose traction and have the tires spin as they met with the roots and dirt. I stopped and then cliked the AWD button and then attempted again. I gave it gas and it revved up but the tires up front did not turn and the a huge cloud of smoke came from the front bottom of the atv. I manged to then get over but then a loud clicking sound began and was more evident as I turned.
Trying to do what I can before heading off to the dealer. Any suggestions? I was told to maybe check the diff. fluid level b/c maybe the fluid shot out of the vent hose and landed on the engine causing the white smoke.

your sure it was front end fluid that came out? was th front wheels caught or locked into some debri where they couldnt turn easily? it only takes about a 1/5 of rear wheel spin to engage the front tires to turn while in awd. only thing that i can guess is some how you broke the roller cage in the front end whick isnt cheap to fix. imo.

I am not sure what came out, the diff. fluid was a thought that one of my buddies had. I had both tires butted up against roots which may have made it super difficult for the front to turn. I wil be calling the dealer here this week. Gotta see what the funds look like.
Is this roller cage something that normally breaks? I had a bombardier outlander before this with ITP mudlites and rims and flipped, rolled, and abused it and nothing ever broke. I bought a Polaris b/c they were supposed to be bullet proof and this seems like a really stupid break that shouldnt have happened. I mean, arent these machines supposed to be ridden in places where the terrain is rough?

Were you trying to climb them in high or low? If you were in high you could of "smoked" the belt. Did it smell like rubber? If you killed the belt it will make a awful clunking sound untill you replace it. Just a thought.
