Default HO engine in non HO

My question is can I put an 02 HO engine on my 98 Sportsman 500. I thing that the cam is shot on my 98 sportsman 500. Could I realistically put the engine from a 02 sportsman 500 HO into my quad? Said HO engine comes with everything except the carb. Does come with the main drive clutch. Could I use my carb or will an HO carb be needed?

Thanks!

by looking at t he parts break down of each year bike the mounts are the same on both engines so should fit right in w/ no issues. didnt check the wire narness though. the carbs are totally differnt all together w/ the throttle being on the other side of the carb on the 02 verse the 98' and has a differnt carb all together. hope that helps a little.

Save yourself the headache and replace the cam and followers on yours. The HO cam bolts right in, less work in my eyes.

The H.O just has a higher duration Cam and a larger 40mm carb vs your 34mm. Like mentioned you can put a H.O cam in the motor, Your carb will work on a H.O motor you just use your motor's intakes and air box hose that is made for the smaller dia 34mm carb.

so the throttle cable that is onthe other side of his carb has enough play to fit over to the newer carb? thats good to know if it will work.

Not sure about that, but since he will be using his existing throttle cable and carb it will work as before except the motor will be a H.O. He just has to use his 34mm motor intake and airbox I would imagine .
